Since November 2020 It is the responsibility of the person in control of risk assessment (risk assessment comes under the the health and safety act) to have in place a PAT test certificate regardless of the size of business. It is important to check with your insurance provider the frequency of testing. If you have employees it is necessary to adhere to the electrical safety regulations as set out in current standards as governed by the Electricity at Work Regulations ACT (1989).

Pat Testing is a term that is used to describe the process of electrical testing. Electrical testing of appliances and electrical infrastructure is a legal requirement. There are 4 different laws that include levels of electrical safety. the rule of thumb is that if you employ people, or work in anyway with the general public, that as duty holder for risk inspection and health and safety you must comply with electrical safety laws. If you wish for further clarification contact the HSE.

This has been a subject that has been avoided for many years, however we now have further clarity from the IET and it reads.

"It is the Duty holder for risk assessment to assess the risk of harm to the employee regardless of where they work from. They must take into consideration when assessing the frequency of use and the environment they are working in. This includes working on building sites or employees working out of their own home or office. It is up to the employer if they are providing equipment or are subcontracting to make sure their equipment is electrically compliant and safe to use.

Yes, it is a legal requirement that all High Multiple Occupancy dwellings are Annually Pat Tested. At Dorset Pat Testing, we Test, Document and annualise our testing so you do not have to remember each year. Our system will contact you 11 months after your inspection to remind you to book your next test.

On the 15th January 2015 the owners of a Weymouth guest house left their guest house to enjoy a Sunday roast at local restaurant. An hour later they received a phone call from one of their guests saying the fire alarms had been activated and there was smoke pouring from the kitchen area. The fire service were called and they extinguished a kitchen fire. The fire was started by a plug fault on the dryer that had been left on whilst they had gone out.

What caused the Grenfell Fire disaster?

On the 14th June 2017 a fire ripped through Grenfell tower killing 72 people.

In the final draft of the report into the full extent of failings behind the Grenfell Tower police laid out that a fire started by a faulty fridge-freezer on the 4th floor ignited cladding and insulation.

Why is it so important to have your small appliances tested.

In a busy office or guesthouse is normal that your appliances will be dropped, kicked or suffer general wear and tear. Plugs will become damaged and can lead to fire.

          Is Pat Testing Law?

The UK Health and Safety Executive along with insurance companies will expect you to perform PAT testing to ensure that you are compliant with certain regulations including:

Health and Safety at Work Act of 1974

The Electricity at Work Regulations of 1989

The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations of 1998

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations of 1999

Most insurance companies will also stipulate that Pat Testing is a requirement under their policies.
